Ø Mathematical Methods in the Physical
Sciences (3rd Edition) by Mary L. Boas.
- Synopsis: This course
provides a continuation of the mathematics required for both the Honours and Major programs in Physics and Astronomy.
Topics to be covered:
Ø Partial Differential
Equations (Boas’ Book, Chapter 13, Sections 1-3, 5, 7);
Ø Generalized Coordinate
Systems (Arfken’s Book, Chapter 3, Section 10);
Ø Sturm-Liouville Theory
for Ordinary Differential Equations (Arfken’s Book,
Chapter 8, Sections 1-3); and
Ø Complex Analysis (Arfken’s Book, Chapter 11, Sections 1-9).
- Homework Assignments: There will be a weekly assignment (posted
on http://www2.physics.umanitoba.ca/u/khodr/PHYS3496-F24/homework.html)
in order to help you digest the material. You will receive the assignments
also via the online grading system Crowdmark
and you will have to submit the solutions on Crowdmark
too; to learn how to do that please click on this link https://crowdmark.com/help/completing-and-submitting-an-assignment/. These assignments will
generally be due on Thursdays at 11:59 pm. Since uploading the
solutions may take some time, please do not wait till the last minute to
submit your solutions. Late
assignments will not
be accepted; so please hand in what you have by the due date.
- Midterm Exam: There will be a 75-minute midterm exam,
tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024 during the normal lecture slot. The exam will
consist of questions and problems similar to those found at the end of the
sections/chapters in the book(s). The exam will be closed book, but you

to aid you. No makeup midterm exam will be given. A fair assessment will
be made for certified absence in a test after the final examination has
been written.
- Final Exam: The final exam will be on all the material
covered during the course. It will be 3 hours in length; the exact date
and time of the exam (in December) will be announced later in class and on
http://www2.physics.umanitoba.ca/u/khodr/PHYS3496-F24.
You will be permitted to have two 8.5 by 11-inch sheets of notes.
- Course Grade: The final grades will be
determined as follows:
Ø Homework Assignments – 25%
Ø Midterm Exam - 25%
Ø Final Exam - 50%
Then the
letter grades will be assigned based on the following chart.
