Available in the bookstore as a special “binder-ready” version that includes a licence to use WileyPLUS, which will be used in this course for homework assignments. The same licence will also be valid for Phys1030. We will cover most of chapters 1 - 14 of the text.
Note: earlier editions of the textbook may also be used, but a separate WileyPLUS licence must also be purchased. While the material is largely the same in the various editions of the text, the problem numbers are different in some cases. Correspondence to older edtions is here.

Term Test 2 Adjusted Scores
All uploaded work for Test 2 has now been graded, and a correction to one version of one question has been applied.
The raw scores after these evaluations averaged to 52.5%, and all sections were 50% or better.
Because of the difficulty of one question, these marks were then taken out of 9 (i.e. multiplied by 10/9, but capped at 10). Finally, a small linear correction was applied. The resulting course-wide average for Test 2 is now 63%.
Your final mark is shown out of 10 and as a percentage in the UMLearn grade book under "Term Test 2 adjusted". See Grades and User Progress/Grades/Other/Term Test 2 adjusted.

• Registration code for WileyPLUS (free with new copies of the textbook at the bookstore)
This is provided free with new copies of the textbook at the bookstore. Homework problems from the textbook will be assigned via the WileyPLUS online learning and evaluation system. Additional aids to solving problems and understanding the important concepts are available in the Read, Study & Practice section of the WileyPlus site linked on the Homework page. Note: If an earlier edition of the textbook is used, a separate WileyPLUS licence must also be purchased.
• iClicker (required for all lecture sections)
The iClicker system will be used to help students assimilate the basic concepts and ideas as soon as they are introduced in the lectures. Instructions for setting up, registering, and using your iclickers are here.
• Scientific Calculator
NOTE: The instructors reserve the right to restrict the use of calculators which have large storage capacity, or which have the capability of remote communication, during tests and examinations. If you have concerns about the acceptability of your calculator, please contact your instructor WELL BEFORE any test or examination.
• Ruler and measuring tape, available as a course pack from U of M Bookstore (not req'd if you have a lab exemption)
• PC/laptop/mobile device and a reliable internet connection for online lectures; you may want a headset as well
Evaluation
Letter grades will be assigned based on the distribution of marks in the course, with the C/C+ boundary near the mean, and grade divisions based on the standard deviation, with A+ corresponding to 2 standard deviations above the mean. Boundaries will not normally be higher than 90 (A+), 80 (A), 75 (B+), 70 (B), 65 (C+), 60 (C), 50 (D).
A sufficient percentage of the total mark will be provided to the students before the Voluntary Withdrawal deadline. The final grades will be submitted to Aurora by the grade submission deadline and available on that website.

PHYS1020 is a non-calculus survey course in Physics covering topics in mechanics and thermodynamics, with illustrations drawn from the life sciences and physical sciences. This course, together with the sequel PHYS 1030, is recommended for students seeking either a single, comprehensive course in Physics or entry into health science programs. It may also be used for entry into the Honours Physics program ("B+" or better) or the Major Physics program ("B" or better).
