Convection is one of the three basic mechanisms of heat transfer. It is a process in which heat is carried by the bulk motion of a fluid (liquid or gas). The image shows a calculation of thermal convection in the earth's mantle. Red represents hot regions that are less dense and rise upwards, while blue (colder) regions move downwards.
