Speckle Patterns

Warning: the full version of the animation loading below is approx. 1.4 megs in size.

When ultrasonic waves travel through a strongly scattering, random medium, they interfere to form a speckle pattern in which the intensity fluctuates across the output face of the sample. This larger animation shows how the pattern evolves in time during a pulsed experiment, as the pulse travels longer and longer multiple scattering paths through the sample. The approximate time interval below is from 42.0 to 91.0 microseconds. A more detailed explanation will be added to this page shortly.
