Physics & Astronomy graduate program supplementary regulations

The supplementary regulations contain all the FGS and department specific rules that govern your graduate studies in our department. Examples are the thesis proposal, the candidacy exam, the required credit hours, thesis committee etc. You should familiarize yourself with these rules.

  • The supplementary regulations are posted by FGS here.

Old updates

  • The latest version went into effect on January 1, 2021. Here are the pertinent changes:
    • Sec. 4.4.1: We now require that at time of admission to the program, the advisor and the prospective student submit a department-internal form “proposed coursework”, which has to be approved by the Graduate Committee.
    • Sec. 4.4.2: A few course titles have been updated to reflect the CAMPEP accredited names.
      • PHYS 7360 Medical Radiation Physics
      • PHYS 7370 Radiation Therapy Physics: Previously called Radiotherapy Physics.
      • PHYS 7400 Linear Systems for Imaging: Previously called Medical Imaging.
    • Sec. 4.4.2: For the Comprehensive M.Sc. Medical and Health Physics Program we remove the previously existing course requirement of “core” physics courses. In lieu of this requirement, the department will prescribe a more tailored program based on the “proposed coursework” form mentioned above. The modification does not affect total credit hours.
    • Sec. 5.1.3: In case of a transfer from MSc to PhD, an updated “proposed coursework” form has to be submitted, reflecting the course level expected for a PhD, and has to be approved by the Graduate Committee.
    • Sec. 5.2.4: The department now falls back to the FGS specification “The advisory committee must consist of a minimum of three (3) members”. Previously we had a minimum of 4. With the removal of a mandatory “internal external” member, there is no need for 4 mandatory members. The advisor is included in the count.
    • Sec. 5.4: Again, for admission to the PhD program, the form “proposed coursework”, must be submitted and approved by the Graduate Committee.
    • Sec. 5.4: For the general physics program, we remove the “core course” requirement (i.e. PHYS 7540/7550/7590/7600).
    • Sec 5.4: For the PhD in Medical Physics, again, a few course names are brought up to date (see above, sec. 4.4.2)
