An introduction to the following topics as they relate to the properties of solids: crystal structure and lattice energy; lattice vibrations; specific heat; free-electron gas; electronic band structure; metals, semiconductors and insulators.  Prerequisite: a "C" or better in PHYS 3386 or the former PHYS 3380 and PHYS 4680 or the former PHYS 3680.
